MISSION |
|
The primary mission of the Library is to provide service to all
operating units in the Herbert C. Hoover Building, those Department
of Commerce operating units and offices not maintaining their own
libraries, other federal agencies, and the public. |
|
|
|
SCOPE |
|
The collection consists of books and periodicals in the following
subject areas or categories: business; economics; international
trade; management; telecommunications; CD-ROM products (phone disc
and major newspapers); and online resources (Knight-Ridder, NEXIS,
Dow Jones, and Dun and Bradstreet). The Library is a selective
government depository. |

CLIENTELE |
|
The primary clientele includes all Commerce employees and other
government agencies. Assistance is provided to the academic and
business communities. The library is open to the public for
reference use only from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. |

SERVICES |
|
|
|
REFERENCE |
|
The Library staff provides several levels of reference assistance to
Commerce employees. Training or instruction in the use of most
CD-ROM products is also available to Commerce employees. ONLINE
SEARCHES ARE PERFORMED FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY. |

|
ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOG |
|
Access to library resources is available by author, title, or
keyword via an automated catalog. |
|
|
|
CIRCULATION |
Commerce employees at the HCHB may borrow books from the circulating
collection for four (4) weeks. Any item may be renewed in person or
via telephone provided that no one has reserved it. New books may
circulate after being displayed for two (2) weeks. Reference
materials, CD-ROM products, journals and newspapers do not
circulate.
The library reserves the right to recall materials at anytime.

PHOTOCOPYING |
|
A photocopying machine is available in the library for government
employees.
|
|
INTERLIBRARY LOANS |
|
Materials not available in the collection may be borrowed for
Commerce employees from other libraries or information centers.
Generally, reference books and periodical issues are not available
for loan. The library must observe the circulating policies of the
lending library. |

U.S. CENSUS RESOURCES |
|
A selective collection (print and microfiche) of U.S. Census
publications including books, subject reports, and CD-ROM products.
The scope of the collection focuses on business, foreign trade,
demographics, and population. |

|
DOCUMENT REQUEST |
Articles from journals may be retrieved, by the library staff,
through online or document delivery services.
|
|
ACQUISITIONS |
Materials that are acquired to enhance the timeliness of the core
resources and to support the needs of current research and/or
topical business themes are germane to the collection. Materials are
selected by reference librarians using standard business selection
tools. Any Commerce employee may submit titles, along with a
statement of justification, for consideration as additions to the
collection. All items acquired become property of the library.
